龚诗阳，北京师范大学经济与工商管理学院教授，清华大学管理学博士。研究领域涵盖市场营销与消费者行为。他近期的研究重点是市场营销与行为遗传学、生成式人工智能等交叉研究方向。他于2025年获得国家自然科学基金青年科学基金（B类）项目资助。

This paper uses genetic data as instrumental variables to address the challenge of identifying social influence in observational studies. We examine 78 behavioral traits of more than 400,000 individuals in the United Kingdom Biobank database. These traits span individuals’ daily activities, health habits, health status, household well-being, intake of various foods, and job characteristics. While most of these traits exhibit correlations among individuals in the same neighborhood, a small subset reflects causal influence and the number decreases with the residential distance between individuals. We analyze genetic data to evaluate the robustness of the findings to the assumptions underlying the instrumental variable approach. In particular, we conduct our own genome-wide association studies to control for people’s genetic tendencies toward geographic self-selection. The most robustly contagious traits are household income, time spent watching television, and body mass index, underscoring the value of mechanism design to leverage their social externalities.
