活动简介:
Product recall timing is a consequential operations decision because once a credible defect signal becomes known inside the firm, managers must decide whether continued investigation remains defensible or whether formal corrective action should begin. This issue is best understood as a post-awareness action-threshold problem and that CEO regulatory focus helps explain where firms set that threshold. Drawing on regulatory focus theory, this study predicts that promotion-focused CEOs will tolerate longer delays because they are more sensitive to premature lock-in, whereas prevention-focused CEOs will move more quickly because they are more sensitive to duty failure and omission-side loss. Defect severity compresses managerial discretion, weakening the promotion-delay relationship and strengthening the prevention-acceleration relationship. Findings from an event-level panel of 6,555 FDA-regulated recall events from 152 publicly traded U.S. firms between 2000 and 2025 support these predictions. By reframing awareness-to-initiation delay as a threshold-setting problem, this study extends product recall research and behavioral operations by showing how executive cognition shapes corrective-action timing in regulated quality management.
