The School of Management of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was established in 1979 and it has developed from the former Department of Engineering Economics, Department of Management Engineering, School of Economics and Management and School of Business Administration to the current School of Management(SOM).


The SOM has an excellent faculty team being familiar with the world’s advanced management idea and Chinese enterprises development experience. Now, there are 121 full-time faculty members, including 54 professors, 40 associate professors and 27 lecturers, the faculty with doctoral degree accounting for 96%. The SOM has 1 innovation research group of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), 2 winners of Distinguished Young Scientist by NSFC, 3 winners of Excellent Young Scientists by NSFC, 8 faculty supported by Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and 25 “Huazhong Outstanding Scholars”. The SOM also employed more than 100 experts, scholars and industry elites with profound academic credentials and rich experience as consultant professors, part-time faculty or industry mentors.


There are 7 departments in SOM, which are Department of Production Operation and Logistics Management, Department of Management Science and Information Management, Department of Business Administration, Department of Accounting, Department of Finance, Department of Public Finance and Department of Innovation Entrepreneurship and Intellectual Property. There are 2 bachelor’s programs, which are Bachelor of Management in 6 majors of Information Management and Information System, Logistics Management, Business Administration, Marketing Management, Accounting and Financial Management, and Bachelor of Economics in major of Public Finance. There are 2 academic master’s programs which are Master of Management in 5 majors of Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration, Accounting, Technology Economics and Management and Intellectual Property Management, and Master of Laws in major of Economic Law. There are 3 professional master’s programs which are Master of Business Administration (MBA/EMBA), Master of Engineering Management (MEM), and Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc). There is 1 Ph.D. program which is Doctor of Management in 2 majors of Management Science and Engineering and Business Administration.


In 2000, the MBA program ranks 7th in the qualification assessments organized by the Academic Degrees Office of the State Council and National MBA Education Supervision Committee. In 2002, the School of Management was approved to set up the EMBA program by the Academic Degrees Office of the State Council. In 2012, the SOM has successfully attained AMBA accreditation and has been re-accreditated by AMBA successively in 2016 and 2021 with a maximum validity of 5 years. In 2020, the school successfully attained AACSB accreditation. In 2017, the principle of Business Administration ranked A- and the principle of Management Science and Engineering ranked B+ in the 4th round of China Discipline Ranking organized by MoE. In 2017 and 2018 Shanghai Ranking of Academic Subjects in China, the discipline of Management Science and Engineering ranked top 1% in China together with Tsinghua University, and was selected into the “Double First-rate” discipline group of “management and communication” in the university. In UTD Top 100 Business School Research Rankings (2015-2019), SOM ranked 9th among the business school in Chinese mainland. In 2021 Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, Business Administration ranked No.1 and Management Science ranked No.3-5 in Chinese Mainland. In 2021 THE World University Rankings’ China Subject Rating, Management Science and Engineering and Business Administration were both rated as A level.


The SOM has strong scientific research strength and has undertaken more than 1,500 consultancy projects at the national and provincial levels, and nearly 300 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the National Social Science Fund of China (NSSFC), including 1 project of Innovation Group, 1 project of  Distinguished Young Scientists Fund, 3 projects of Excellent Young Scientists Fund, 16 key international (regional) cooperative research projects of NSFC and 4 key projects of NSSFC. From 2016 to 2020, among the papers published by the faculty of SOM, there were 635 papers in the SCI/SSCI and 34 papers in UT Dallas Top 24 Leading Business Journals. The SOM also obtained the “University Leadership Award” from CASA/SME due to outstanding achievements in the research of 863/SSCI. According to the statistics of the Schools’ ESI Discipline Contribution Report of HUST in 2020 (2009-2019), the SOM published 902 papers in ESI, with a total of 9858 times of citations and 10.93 times on average, involving 15 disciplines; Contribution of the SOM ranks 1st in the fields of economics and business as well as psychiatry and psychology and ranks 2nd in social science. The influence of the SOM is dominant on the distinctive disciplines in the university. In 2005, the “Modern Information Management and Research Center” was approved to be one of the Hubei Provincial Humanities & Social Sciences Key Research Bases. In 2009, the “Intellectual Property and Knowledge Innovation Research Center” was approved to be one of the Strategic Research Bases of the Ministry of Education. In 2014, the SOM was awarded as the “Hubei Provincial Enterprise Technology Innovation and Soft Science Research Base”. Besides, the SOM also has more than 30 research institutions such as China (southern) Poverty Reduction and Development Research Institute and Independent Innovation and Technology Reward Research Center (school level). “Hubei Provincial Technology Economy and Management Modernization Research Society”, “Industrial Engineering Committee of Hubei Provincial Mechanical Engineering Academy” and “Computer Simulation Branch of the Research Society for China Optimization Method, Overall Planning Method and Economic Mathematics” are also subordinate to the SOM.


In the past 40 years, there has been nearly 30,000 graduates in total. In terms of student education, SOM focuses in four aspects namely ”elite awareness, global view, practice capacity and humanistic quality”, and won gold and silver awards for many consecutive years in a lot of contests such as China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Competition, “Challenge Cup” China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Planning Competition, China College Students’ Logistic Design Competition, CIMA International Business Elite Challenge, Deloitte Tax Championship etc.. In 2014, a student won the unique individual award of “Future Business Leader” in the CIMA International Business Elite Challenge. The graduates of the school are highly welcomed by employers with the employment rate up to 95% and nearly 50% of the students continue their studies in domestic and overseas well-known universities. The graduates work for world top 500 enterprises, large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises, scientific research institutes and government agencies etc.


The SOM actively communicates and cooperates with overseas schools and institutions in more than 10 countries and regions including USA, Canada, France, Germany, UK etc. At the same time, as a professional research institute, the SOM provides consultation and training services covering national, regional and industrial development planning, enterprise strategy, information management, e-commerce, production operation, logistics management, marketing, human resources, financial accounting, innovation management, finance, intellectual property and quality control, etc., which have brought positive social impacts. The powerful strength and development prospects also attracted social attentions, either of the famous enterprises building cooperation bases with the SOM, or donate to the school. Some of the professors were employed as consultants or independent directors in enterprises. In 2010, the General Armament Department of PLA officially approve the SOM to set up the “National Defense Intellectual Property Education and Training Base of the National Defense Patent Office for General Armament Department”; in 2011, the Organization Department, provincial SASAC and provincial economy and IT commission of Hubei Province approved the SOM to set up “Hubei Provincial Entrepreneur Training Base”.


The academic periodical Chinese Journal of Management undertaken by the SOM is  recognized as one of the 30 Important Journals recognized by the Department of Management Science of the NSFC and in the Recommended List of High-quality Journals in Management Science (FMS Journal Rating Guide). It is listed in the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI), the Chinese Core Journals Catalogue, the Chinese Science Citation Index (CSCI) and other domestic authoritative databases. Since 2014, it has been continuously evaluated as "China's Most Influential Academic Journal" by the China Academic Literature International Evaluation Research Center and "Most Popular Journal in Management" by the National Center for Philosophy and Social Science Literature. It has also been rated as an important journal in the AMI Comprehensive Evaluation Report of Chinese Humanities and Social Science Journals, and has been awarded the Hubei Provincial Excellent Journal. The Anheuser-Busch Library jointly built with American Anheuser-Busch Company is the most distinctive management library in China.


The vision statement of the SOM is to create a management school, which is topflight internationally and prestigious domestically. We aim to become an internationally recognized business school by 2035.
