(Communicator: Zhao Tingwei: On October 18, 2019, with the invitation of Professor Yu Xiang, President of Sino-European Institute for Intellectual Property (SEIIO) and Director of Chinese-German Institute for Intellectual Property, Professor Dietmar Harhoff, academician of the Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften and Academy of Science and Engineering, member of the Group of Experts on Innovative Dialogue of German Chancellor Angela Dorothea Merkel, director of the Institute of Innovation and Competition of Max Planck, visited our school and gave a lecture on the theme of “Approximating the Standard Essentiality of Patents –A Semantics-Based Analysis” to the teachers and students in the school. The lecture was chaired by Professor Yu Xiang.

Professor Dietmar Harhoff first indicated the meaning of standard essential patents (SEPs) and its strategic importance of patents in both theory and practice. Next, he used the method of semantic differential to do a quantitative analysis of SEP and shared the latest study results of his team. Finally, Professor Harhoff looked forward to the future main direction of the research on SEP, such as the prediction of combination of SEP in the field of 5G, the best timing for disclosure of SEP application, and so on.

The present teachers and students learned a lot from the detailed answers that Professor Harfoff gave to every question. It is known that not only the students of the Schools of Management and Law attended the lecture, but also did some overseas students from other countries and regions.
