Professor Dietmar Harhoff, Academician of German National Academy of Sciences, Was Appointed As Honorary Professor of Our University

(Article by Zhu Xiuzhu and photo by Feng Jiaxing) On the afternoon of October 16, professor Dietmar Harhoff, academician of the German National Academy of Sciences, academician of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering, member of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Innovation Dialogue Expert Group and currently Director of the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, visited our university and was appointed as an honorary professor. Vice President Zhan Yiqing presented an honorary professorship to professor Harhoff.


The recruitment ceremony was held in Siyuan Hall of Wutongyu Inquiry Center. Zhan Yiqing, Vice President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology; Liao Xiaofei, Director of the International Exchange Department; Wang Zongjun, Dean of the School of Management; Jin Lingzhi, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Management; Wang Haijun, Assistant to the Dean of the School of Management; and Yu Xiang, Dean of the Sino-European Institute for Intellectual Property attended the ceremony. The ceremony was officiated by professor Yu Xiang.


Vice President Zhan Yiqing delivered a welcoming speech, and briefly introduced the development of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. President Zhan pointed out that the development of the Sino-European Institute for Intellectual Property and the Chinese-German Institute for Intellectual Property are closely related to the strong support of the Max Planck Institute. He believed that on the basis of past successes, the two sides will further deepen their cooperation in joint research, exchange of experts and lectures, and exchange of students. President Zhan said, Huazhong University of Science and Technology will more actively support the development of the Sino-European Institute for Intellectual Property. He hoped that the School of Management will continue to vigorously support the talent introduction and team building of the intellectual property team. It is hoped that Dean Yu Xiang will lead the China-EU Intellectual Property Research Institute to give full play to its advantages and further form an intellectual property talent training system with distinctive international characteristics and remarkable achievements in integrating theory with practice.


Professor Yu Xiang introduced professor Harhoff's study experience, academic achievements and working experience, and stressed that professor Dietmar Harhoff had a good foundation for cooperation with the Chinese-German Institute for Intellectual Property of the School of Management and the Sino-European Institute for Intellectual Property of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The award of professor Dietmar Harhoff as honorary professor will greatly help and support the international academic cooperation between our university and Europe, the United States and other countries and regions. It will also be helpful for our university to cultivate innovative college students and postgraduates, to carry out precise innovation for the vast number of science and engineering discipline teams, to use patent strategy to guide the correct choice of research and development, and to effectively protect, manage and use innovative results, and so on.


Subsequently, Vice President Zhan Yiqing presented professor Harhoff with a letter of appointment and a gift.


Professor Harhoff said it was a great honor to be an honorary professor with our university. The advantages of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in science and engineering are widely recognized by the international community, so their colleagues can communicate with Huazhong University of Science and Technology frequently. Professor Harhoff pays great attention to the importance of interdisciplinary interaction, and hopes that we can continue to explore more possibilities of cooperation with the leaders of our university and the School of Management. He hopes that we can further strengthen the cooperation between the two sides in the future, invite more Doctors and other students to come to Max Planck Institute for exchange, and learn from each other in the fields of innovation policy and intellectual property system and academia in China and Germany. He believes that multilateralism and teamwork are the spirit of the scientific community and that scientists should interact with and learn from each other.


Professor Harhoff was briefed by Dean Wang Zongjun on the School of Management, especially on its scientific research level and honors. Dean Wang pointed out that the School of Management has been actively carrying out extensive and in-depth international exchanges and cooperation, professor Harhoff has rich experience and rich academic achievements, and this appointment has played an important role in promoting the development of the School of Management and the discipline of intellectual property. Dean Wang said that he fully agrees with professor Harhoff's proposal to carry out multi-faceted cooperation, and hopes to deepen training, cooperation and exchange details with professor Harhoff, and firmly believes that such cooperation will achieve the expected results.


Subsequently, Liao Xiaofei, Director of the International Exchange Office, pointed out that the Huazhong University of Science and Technology is strong and fruitful in science and technology. Max Planck Institute can cooperate not only with Huazhong University of Science and Technology in the field of intellectual property rights, but also in the fields of computer science, machinery, and other science and technology.After the ceremony, the leaders took a group photo with professor Harhoff.



People link: Professor Dietmar Harhoff, born in Germany in August 1958, received his doctorate in Management from MIT Sloan School of Management in 1991, his Master's degree in Public Administration from Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University in 1987, and his Bachelor's degree in Engineering from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Dortmund, Germany, in 1984. He is currently Director of the Institute for Innovation and Competition of the Max Planck Institute (formerly the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property and Competition Law), honorary professor of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the University of Munich and Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship of the University of Munich; Academician of the German National Academy of Sciences, academician of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering, academician of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, Germany.


Professor Dietmar Harhoff has a wide field of vision, a wealth of papers and works, has made great achievements in the fields of innovation research management, entrepreneurship and innovation policy, empirical economics and industrial economics, has a high impact in the international peers, and is also a leader in patent strategy, patent data mining theory and methods. Professor Dietmar Harhoff has published 12 papers in Research Policy, one of the world's top SSCI journals on innovation research, and a series of high-level papers in Management Science, Journal of Business Venturing, etc., one of the world's top SSCI journals on management science.


Professor Dietmar Harhoff is not only fruitful in theoretical research, engaged as the Director of the Institute of Innovation and Competition of the Max Planck Institute of Germany, which is renowned as an academic center in the field of intellectual property, innovation and competition research in the world, but also good at integrating theory with practice and leading a team to provide very important intellectual property and innovation policy consulting services to German and European governments and industrial enterprises. He is also the Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for the German Agency for Subversive Innovation, a member of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Group of Experts on Innovation Dialogue, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Federal Ministry of economy and science and technology, among others; He served as Chairman of the Scientific and Economic Advisory Committee of the European Patent Office and Vice Chairman and Chairman of the European Intellectual Property Policy Association.
